Sign up for Queen Creek’s adult softball league

Registrations are now being accepted for the town of Queen Creek’s Winter Adult Co-Rec Softball League.

The league season is Jan. 7 through March 20. Games will be played on Wednesday and/or Friday evenings at Founders’ Park, 22407 S. Ellsworth Road. The registration fee is $500 per team.

General registration for the league runs through Nov. 20, with late registration going on Nov. 24 through 26. Teams who register late will be charged a $40 fee.

Individual players who would like to be placed on a team should call the Parks and Recreation Department and submit their name, address, phone number, position and experience. A list of individual players seeking to get on a team will be compiled and distributed to coaches.

Skate competition hosted in QC this Saturday

The deadline to register for Queen Creek’s first official skate competition is this Thursday.

The competition, which will be held this Saturday at Founder’s Park, will let boys and girls ages 6 and older compete in six different age divisions.

Participants are encouraged to bring bottled water and required to bring their own helmets, knee pads and arm pads.

Register between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the town’s Parks and Recreation Office, 22350 S. Ellsworth Road, which is open Monday through Thursday. Registration after Nov. 10 is $10, which includes a T-shirt for each participant.

The competition itself runs from 9:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 15 at Founder’s Park, 22407 S. Ellsworth Road, Queen Creek.

QC offices closed for Veterans Day

The town of Queen Creek’s administrative offices will be closed Tuesday in observance of Veterans Day.

Emergency services, like the fire department and sheriff’s office, will be open.

Veterans remembered Saturday at San Tan Mountain Regional Park

Queen Creek and San Tan-area residents are invited to remember veterans this Saturday at San Tan Mountain Regional Park.

San Tan PRIDE and American Legion Post 129 will hold a ceremony remembering all United States veterans and reading the names of all Arizonans who have died serving their country in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A free lunch will follow the ceremony.

The event starts at 10 a.m. Nov. 8 at the Nathan Martens Arizona Memorial in San Tan Mountain Regional Park, 6533 W. Phillips Road, Queen Creek.

Road closure pushed back

A scheduled closure of Queen Creek Road between Crismon and Signal Butte roads has been pushed back by a few days.

The area was scheduled to be closed from Nov. 4 to Nov. 24 for road widening work. That work will now be completed between Nov. 10 and Dec. 1.

Local traffic will be allowed during the closure. Through traffic will be detoured using Crismon and Ocotillo roads.

Queen Creek wants input on future development areas

Queen Creek residents are invited to a public hearing on Nov. 10 to voice opinions regarding the future development of several areas within the town. Queen Creek’s voter-approved General Plan, the guiding document for town growth and development, is subject to three major amendments.

On Monday, the Planning and Zoning Commission will review the following proposals:

-Amend the land use of 51 acres at the northwest corner of Ocotillo and Ellsworth Loop roads from a medium density residential zoning, which allows two to three homes per acre, to Town Center

-Amend the land use of 130 acres at the northeast corner of Ocotillo and Hawes roads from medium density residential zoning to medium high density residential-A, which allows for zero to five homes per acre

-Amend the land use of 257 acres of employment type-A zoning at the northwest corner of Queen Creek and Meridian roads to 20 acres of employment type-B zoning, 20 acres of community commercial zoning, 138 acres of medium high density residential-A, and 79 acres of medium high density residential-B zoning, which allows zero to eight homes per acre

The upcoming public hearing starts at 6 p.m., during the Planning and Zoning Commission’s work study meeting, at Queen Creek’s town hall, 22350 S. Ellsworth Road.

The town council will hold public hearings during its meeting on Dec. 3, at which time Council will take action on each of the proposed amendments.

Library hosts grand opening celebration Saturday

Queen Creek’s new library will have its official grand opening this weekend.

The $18 million, 27,000-square-foot library is an upgrade from the old 1,700 square-foot facility. It features 30,000 books and other library materials, 34 computers and wireless Internet access for patrons.

Grand opening festivities will include live entertainment, displays, puppet shows, a book parade, Friends of the Library book sale, recreation class demonstrations and registration, giveaways and library card sign-ups.

The grand opening event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the library, located at the northwest corner of Ellsworth and Ocotillo roads.

Regular hours for the library will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday and closed on Sunday.

QC looking for Christmas festival sponsors, vendors

Queen Creek’s Parks and Recreation Department is seeking sponsors and vendors for Queen Creek’s Hometown Christmas.

This year’s festival will feature visits with Santa, arts and crafts and entertainment by local children’s dance and choral groups.

The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Queen Creek Library, 21802 S. Ellsworth Road.

Portion of Queen Creek Road to close for three weeks

Queen Creek Road will be closed to through traffic between Crismon and Signal Butte roads for about three weeks for street widening work.

The area will be closed starting Nov. 4 and is expected to reopen Nov. 24.

Leisure class instructors wanted

Queen Creek is looking for instructors to teach special interest classes in the new Recreation Annex of the town’s library.

The town is accepting proposals for classes from qualified instructors interested in leading courses on things like fitness, dance, arts and crafts, and general education. Classes are expected to get underway in January 2009.
