Sports complex now open

Queen Creek’s new sports complex is open and ready for business.

The Barney Family Sports Complex, a private facility operated on a corner of the Barney Farm, is having an open house this Saturday to let people check out all they have to offer. The all-day event will include hockey and soccer exhibition games and clinics.

The open house runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 10 at the Barney Family Sports Complex, 22050 E. Queen Creek Road, Queen Creek. Visit www.thebfsc.com for an exact schedule, a map and directions.

Town wants broadcasting input

Queen Creek is looking for input regarding the broadcasting of town council meetings online and on Cox channel 11.

The town started broadcasting its council meetings in June 2008. The council is now interested in how many residents are watching meetings on Cox Channel 11 and online and what types of programming viewers would like to see on Cox channel 11.

The survey is available online on on the town’s Web site.

Free blood pressure checks offered Wednesday

Queen Creek’s fire department is offering free blood pressure checks this Wednesday.

The department performs blood pressure checks from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month at town hall, 22350 S. Ellsworth Road, Queen Creek.

Take a trip to the state capitol

Queen Creek residents are invited to learn about the legislative process at Queen Creek Day at the Legislature this month.

Registrations are being accepted now for the Jan. 21 event, which will let participants talk about issues important to Queen Creek, hear from lawmakers, learn about the 2009 legislative agenda, tour the House and Senate chambers and enjoy a free lunch.

Transportation will be provided by the Town of Queen Creek. Vans will leave Town Hall, 22350 S. Ellsworth Road, at 10 a.m. and return at 2:30 p.m. Individuals may also meet the group in front of the Legislative Chambers at Capitol Mall, 1700 W. Washington St., Phoenix, at 11 a.m.

Senior program on the move

The Queen Creek Senior Program will move to the Library Recreation Annex Jan. 6.

All regularly scheduled meetings will be held in the new Annex located north of the northwest corner of Ellsworth and Ocotillo roads.
Meeting times for the senior program are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Traffic updates for Dec. 25 through Jan. 8

Queen Creek has posted the following traffic updates for the next two weeks:

<strong?Ellsworth Road - Cloud Road to north of Chandler Heights Road - Crews continue the work on this portion of street. Drivers should expect periodic lane closures while work is completed. Drivers are advised to pay close attention to the warning signs throughout the work area.

Ellsworth Loop Road/Ocotillo Road - The northbound right lane is closed south of Ocotillo Road so that crews can install necessary street improvements. Work will continue through December.

Rittenhouse Road/Hawes Road - Crews continue work to widen the intersection. Traffic is shifted slightly at the intersection as well as another location slightly west of Hawes Road. Work will continue through December. Drivers should expect flaggers and off-duty patrol office controlling the area throughout the day.

Vendors sought for Garden Show

Queen Creek is accepting applications from landscape and garden vendors to take part in the annual Neighborhoods in Bloom Garden Show.

The Garden Show marks the official kick off of the annual Neighborhoods in Bloom landscape beautification awards, which encourages individuals, neighborhoods and businesses to beautify their property and submit their projects for awards. Event activities and exhibits will focus on providing information, demonstrations and helpful tips on low-water use gardening and landscape installation and maintenance.

The Garden Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 21 at Queen Creek Town Hall.

Queen Creek has posted the following traffic updates for the upcoming week:

Council OKs fire department agreement

Queen Creek’s town council unanimously approved an agreement that continues Gilbert’s role in supporting the Queen Creek fire department Wednesday night.
Gilbert’s council gave the thumbs up to the same agreement Tuesday night, which set the fees Queen Creek pays for epquipment maintenance, training and other services as it continues setting up its own fire department.
The new agreement replaces a contract that expires Dec. 31 and allows Queen Creek to pay up to $395,000 for support services.
Under the old agreement, which was in place for the first year of the new department’s existence, Queen Creek paid $643,014 for such services. That’s less than $3 million to $4 million they were expected to shell out for Gilbert’s support in 2008.

Old computers for sale

Just in time for the holiday season, the Town of Queen Creek is auctioning off salvage computer equipment.

Short sale auctions on a variety of computer equipment are posted on  www.govdeals.com. Registration for the Web site is free and auctions are scheduled to end before the holidays are past.
